The Presentation in the Temple

Window of one curve headed light.

This window depicts Mary and baby Jesus being presented in the Temple to Simeon. Two angels and a descending dove are hovering above the scene. A young child is also seen behind Mary carrying scolls.

Dedication:
‘Dedicated by Helen Crawford Sutherland to the memory of her forefathers who worshipped God in this Church of Saint Mary from its foundation in the year of our Lord eighteen hundred and twenty four. ‘

Artist/Designer:
Robert Burns (1869-1941) was born in Edinburgh and studed at the Royal High School and the Dollar Institution. In the course of his art studies he also attended classes in South Kensington, Paris and at the Royal Scottish Academy Life School. He was an Eminent and successful painter. He designed stained glass window for Chilton & Kemp and Stephen Adam.

Margaret Chilton: (1875-1963) was born in Bristol. She trained at the Royal College of Art with Christoper Whall and Alfred Drury. She moved to Glasgow in 1918 as designer at the Abbey Studio.
Marjorie Kemp: (1885-1975) was born in Blairgowrie. She trained at the Glasgow School of Art.
In 1922, Chilton & Kemp set up a partnership which lasted from 1922-1963 until Chilton’s death. Their studio was based in Edinburgh. (RM 2010)
