Edinburgh: City Chambers, Stairs
Scottish Enlightenment
Window of four panels set into a four paned casement window.
This window is of an abstract geometetrical design drawing ‘inspiration from the Scottish Enlightenment of the 18th Century, when there was a flowering of architectural, intellectual, scientific and cultural ideas. The design combines drawings, original engravings and plans, some from the Royal Botanic Garden, with contemporary writings, including lines from Burns celebrating Nature as muse. The inclusion of the thistle is a continuation of the original early 20th century brief.’ (bridgetjonesglass.co.uk)
Inscription:
“‘O Nature! a’thy shews an’forms
To feeling, pensive hearts hae charms!
Whether the summer kindly warms,
Wi’life an’light;
Or winter howls, in gusty storms,
The lang, dark night!”
From Lines to William Simson by Robert Burns
