Grisaille Window

Window of two lancet lights with tracery.

This window depicts a geometrical glass design based on medieval grisaille work composed of contrasting primary and tertiary colours.

Artist/Designer:
Daniel Cottier- (1838-1891) was born in Glasgow. He apprenticed with the firm John Cairney & CO to learn glass staining, decoration and embossing. He trained and worked with many artists and studios in Edinburgh, Glasgow and London until in 1864 he set up a studio with Andrew Wells in 1864. As Cottier’s popularity grew he set up another gallery and studio in London (c1869), New York, Sydney and Melbourne. He is credited for bringing the Aesthetic movement to the United States.

Firm/Company:
Field & Allan: (1797-1910) a firm of slaters, glaziers and decorators based in Edinburgh and Leith. Daniel Cottier was chief designer from 1861-1864, before setting up his own studio in 1864. Cottier also married Marion Field’s, daughter of William Fields in 1866.
